School Stories
We follow a well-rounded approach to education at all of our campuses – OWIS Nanyang Campus, OWIS Digital Campus and OWIS Newton Campus.
Take a look at our students’ learning in action in our IB and Cambridge curricula at our international school in Singapore. Please click on the photo in the post to view it in its entirety.
Our IB PYP Grade 3 students were so excited and eager to meet our visiting author on 6 February. Mr Swapnil Mishra.
He shared about the real life inspiration of his son wanting to help the people of Nepal. The students were truly taken aback to see the photos of the real fundraiser and hear that his son is indeed nicknamed Freddie!
We heard gasps as he shared the ups and downs of his writing journey - 25 drafts! 😮😮😮 and tricky conversations with his editor.
Then, came of the buzz of getting their signed copies, thank you to parents who bought the book! Throughout the day the teachers caught students reading the book throughout school day.
Moments like this help to give moments of joy linked to reading. We are so grateful to Mr Swapnil`s kind and generous approach to our Grade 3 students.

This week in G1 EAL we participated in the Inaugural OWIS Newton Spelling Bee! We had practiced our CVC and Dolch/Fry words for weeks, as well as used our decoding strategies with digraphs, trigraphs, and vowel teams.
G1 EAL also worked very hard on our public speaking skills. We had to stand in front of an audience, listen carefully for directions, and speak very clearly. G1 was very brave!
Students stand here with their awards to show their dedication to hard work! Congratulations G1!

Apologies for the delay - MADD Week Day 3 was, well, mad.🤭🙊😸
But without further ado, we are happy to share the hot 🔥happenings that took place yesterday: apart from the continued Greek Theatre Choruses, Shakespeare Sonnets, and Drama Repertoires that overflowed with pure talent , the highlight of the day was the beautiful 🤩 Visual Arts Exhibition that showcased the brilliant and creative minds of all OWIS NY students:
1. Fun arts and crafts of our EC class students
2. Original artwork from our IBPYP, Lower Secondary, and IGCSE students, taking inspiration from famed work like `Starry Night`.
3. Storied exhibits built from scratch by our inventive and industrious IB DP Year 2 students.
We also had our Bands 🎸🎺🎶 on the Balcony showcase, where talented students and teachers proved to a large crowd of OWIS staff and students that they had the chops to go global!
Today, we bring to you our Battle of the Bands at the campus MPH - stay tuned for more updates and details coming your way!

MADD Week Day 2 - we kept things going with amazing performances led by our students, who seem to show more and more of their talent as the week goes on!
Highlights from today`s line-up of artistic performances include dramatic Greek Theatre Choruses by Grade 6 students, a pleasantly surprising and rousing performance from our IGCSE Grade 10 students acting out a Drama Repertoire titled "Glass Menagerie", and what I could only describe as a Masquerade Mime improv show comically delivered by Grade 7 students, aptly called "Commedia Del Arte".
It only gets better from here, with events such as a fantastic art exhibition, Battle of the Bands, and "Be A Superstar" coming everyone`s way for the rest of the week. Stay tuned for more talent bursting out of the OWIS Nanyang student body!

In STEAM, our Grade 1 students explored the three states of matter and their characteristics. As part of their project, these students were challenged to design and build a boat that would not sink using recycled materials.
To support their planning, students investigated different materials through a float and sink experiment to better understand how each material behaves when placed in water. They observed, tested, and discussed their findings.
Through the exploration, students concluded that plastic and other solid, waterproof materials are excellent choices for boat building. Objects that contain a lot of air, such as empty plastic bottles, were especially effective in helping a boat float.
We also discussed that while materials like cardboard may initially float, they absorb water over time, which makes them heavier and eventually causes them to sink.

Just before the students left for the CNY Holidays, our EC3 students were engaged in a Subtraction Activity.
The aim was for our young ones to develop their understanding of subtraction by representing and solving subtraction problems using numbers, pictures and fingers. They will apply appropriate strategies to find the difference and explain their thinking.
Several students successfully demonstrated the Learner Profile attributes of being a Thinker and Independent learner by completing the subtraction activity on his own and applying appropriate strategies to solve the problems.

MADD Week Day 1 - Back to school shenanigans?
Walking into the Nanyang campus at 9am, just after returning from the CNY holidays, one would have been greeted with the sight of secondary school students swaying in tandem to a hypnotic song - signalling the start of MADD [Music, Arts, Drama, and Dance] Week at OWIS Nanyang.
From the IGCSE Grade 9 students` interpretative dance kicking things off, we were treated to a day of Shakespearean sonnets by Grade 8 students, a drama repertoire of an intentionally fumbled play by Grade 10 students, a bamboo orchestra for the IB PYP students, and finally an experimental music synthesis session dubbed `Music Electronica`.
A day bursting with talent indeed - and certainly a fantastic start to the week!

Just before leaving for the CNY🧧🧧🧧 holidays, IB PYP Grade 3 students used their Library class to organise the books to simplify the process of returning books post the one-week break. With recent discussions on organisational styles under their belt, they refined their system for ensuring that they would have all of the books they would need to return.
Here are some of the steps they took: 🪜🗂️
☑️ They checked the Reading Nook shelf by shelf.
☑️ They placed all of the borrowed books on carts.
☑️ They made checklists with pictures of the cover pages, and put them in rows on the tables.
☑️ They placed a check/tick next to each book they could account for.
☑️ When all of the books on each page were checked/ticked, they double-checked with another check/tick and moved the completed lists` stack to the back table.
☑️ When they noticed that some books were missing, the young ones visited their classrooms to find them.
With this new system, they managed to process twice the number of books in the same amount of time as they previously did.
Here are some of the tips and tricks they picked up that helped them develop a collaborative mindset:
⭐️ If you see a book in a language you don`t understand - find someone who speaks/reads that language to help you.
⭐️ If you find a book that is broken - get Mrs. Leigh to help you fix it.
Great work G3! Thanks for being AMAZING Library Assistants!
