Physical Education and Competitive Sports Programme at OWIS

At One World International School, we believe that physical education and sports are essential to the holistic development of every child.

Aligned with our school curriculum, our PE programme emphasises concept-based learning, where students explore big ideas such as cooperation, movement efficiency, fairness, resilience, and the relationship between physical activity and wellbeing.

From Early Childhood through to Secondary School, students engage in a range of physical experiences that build fitness, coordination, teamwork, and a lifelong love of movement.
Our curriculum is intentionally structured so that learning progresses at each developmental stage. Across all levels, students develop key Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills communication, social skills, self-management, and critical thinking enabling them to become reflective and responsible learners.

Throughout their PE journey, students are encouraged to embody the values that guide our school and society: respect for others, responsibility for their actions and wellbeing, and integrity in both competitive and collaborative situations. These values shape not only how they participate in physical education but also how they grow as individuals within our diverse global community.

At One World International School, we provide a well-designed sports programme that is coordinated with our academic programme to support all aspects of child development.

The physical education programme at OWIS is designed to promote physical, social and emotional development in our students while simultaneously teaching them about the importance of healthy competition and teamwork. Our specialist-led classes incorporate the fundamentals of both team and individual sports while also teaching students about the value of making physical activity a lifelong healthy habit.

In addition to our physical education programme, students at OWIS have the opportunity to get involved in team sports. These co-curricular activities allow students to connect with their classmates and teachers while competing against other schools in the area.

Our Progressive PE Curriculum

Early Childhood

early childhood

Our Early Childhood PE curriculum focuses on developing Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and building a strong foundation for lifelong physical activity. Students explore a wide variety of body-movement experiences through age-appropriate games, locomotor challenges, dance and introductory ball-handling tasks. Lessons are organised in 6-week rotational units, providing consistent exposure while keeping learning playful, exploratory, and developmentally appropriate.

Key learning includes:

  • Body awareness and control
  • Balance, coordination, and agility
  • Spatial awareness and safe movement
  • Confidence and enjoyment in physical activity

Primary Years

In Primary PE, students build upon their FMS foundation and begin applying these skills in more structured individual and team-based sports. The curriculum includes athletics, ball games, striking-and-fielding, invasion games, swimming, gymnastics, and fitness-based activities. Each unit runs on a 6-week rotation, allowing for deeper skill development while providing variety and progression throughout the year.

Key learning includes:
  • Applying movement skills in game situations
  • Understanding basic game strategies and rules
  • Improving fitness, endurance, and motor competence
  • Developing teamwork, communication, and resilience
  • Building sportsmanship and positive participation habits

Secondary Years

In our secondary school sports programme, the PE curriculum includes two specialists classes per week. Every year, students participate in seven units, and each lasts 5-6 weeks. Well-thought-out units are designed to promote skills in 4 areas:

Thinking skills – engaging and preparing for lessons

Attitude and approach to activities and sports

Performance and motor skills

Demonstrating knowledge and application of skills

These skills are important not only in individual and team sports, but they’re also essential for success in higher education, careers and all other areas of life.

Dedicated PE & Sports Facilities at OWIS Campuses in Singapore

OWIS campuses provide exceptional indoor and outdoor sports facilities:

  • Outdoor facilities at our larger campuses in Nanyang and Punggol include athletics tracks, multi-purpose courts, and outdoor spaces for team sports and physical activities.
  • Indoor facilities support badminton, gymnastics, dance and fitness programmes, ensuring that students have a safe, well-equipped environment to explore and develop their abilities throughout the year.

Our campuses are designed to give students ample space to play, move, and compete, promoting a healthy lifestyle and sportsmanship from an early age.

Showcasing Sports at OWIS

Sports Day Events at OWIS

Sports Day is a highlight of the school calendar across all our campuses, bringing together students in age-appropriate events.

Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary each have their own Sports Days, ensuring activities are engaging, inclusive, and developmentally suited. Students participate in a range of track and field events, including sprints, long jump, and javelin, as well as team games that encourage participation and sportsmanship.

Through friendly competition, students earn house points, celebrate effort, and build school spirit. Sports Day promotes teamwork, resilience, and a love for physical activity in a fun, supportive environment.

All students at OWIS have sports instruction but those students that wish to pursue further studies in PE have the option to complete an CAIE IGCSE in Physical Education in Grade 9 and 10. For our IBDP students, physical education is covered under their CAS programme.

Competitive Opportunities: ACSIS Sports

Beyond regular PE lessons, students in Primary and Secondary School have the opportunity to participate in the ACSIS (Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools) sports programme.

ACSIS provides a structured platform for students to engage in inter-school competitions across a wide range of sports.

Through ACSIS, students are able to:

  • Represent OWIS with pride in various competitive sports
  • Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship in real game environments
  • Gain confidence and experience by competing against peers from other international schools
  • Apply and extend skills learned in PE within a supportive competitive setting

Our ACSIS programme acts as an extension of the PE curriculum, offering students meaningful opportunities to practise their skills, celebrate personal and team achievements, and build strong character through sport.

In recent years, OWIS teams have delivered commendable performances across multiple ACSIS divisions, showcasing their commitment, resilience, and school spirit.
