From Foundation to Fluency: Structured English Language Support Every Step of the Way at OWIS Osaka

Our English language support programmes are designed to help students develop the confidence, fluency, and academic language skills they need to succeed in an international school setting.

Academic English Preparation (AEP) Classes

1. Academic English Preparation Classes

The Academic English Preparation (AEP) programme at OWIS Osaka is a supplementary English language class for students who don’t yet have the English skills they need to fully participate in an English-speaking classroom.

Our AEP programme is purposefully crafted to support non-native English speakers in cultivating the essential language skills for active participation in school. By prioritizing growth in the foundational English and curricula relevant words and phrases, we ensure students are able to engage in classroom activities and succeed in their studies.

AEP Programme Benefits

How is the requirement for AEP decided?

During the application process, students are assessed using an international standard English assessment. Based on the results and their grade level, students are placed into one of three groups:

Above Competency level

Students who meet the required English competency score join mainstream classes.

Primary students below the competency level

Primary students who fall below the competency level receive supplementary English support classes alongside their regular classes until they can fully integrate into the regular class schedule. There are no pass or fail grades for primary students.

Secondary students below the competency level

Secondary school students (Grade 6 and above) who pass the assessment, but fall below the competency level, are required to take AEP classes in addition to regular grade-level classes indefinitely. A minimum level of language competency is required before secondary students can enrol.

Tiered proficiency levels

At OWIS Osaka, there are progressive levels in the AEP, and students are placed at the level that best matches their current English ability. They move to the next level once they successfully complete each stage, and after finishing AEP 3, they transition fully into mainstream classes.

Frequency & Duration

Students in AEP attend at least one dedicated AEP lesson each day. The programme is designed to be targeted and efficient, with the aim that most students complete AEP within one year.

2. April Transition Programme

OWIS Osaka offers a four-month transition programme between April and July.

The programme is especially designed to assist those students who are transitioning from a traditional Japanese school in April, and waiting to start the international academic year in August.

The core benefit of our transition programme is to support students with strengthening their foundational English, maths, and science skills before the OWIS academic year starts.

This gives students with limited English language ability the opportunity to access international education in a way that may not have been possible before.

Other benefits to the transition programme include:

Rapid language acquisition through daily immersive practice

Familiarizing with school routines & inquiry-based education

Social communication and confidence-building

Smooth progression into grade-level academic content

This specialized stream ensures that students can access the curriculum meaningfully and feel supported from the first day of the acadmic year.

3. After-School Intensive English Club

The ACES After-School Intensive English Programme supports students aged 6 and above at different stages of English development, from beginner to advanced. Through small-group instruction, structured lessons, and engaging activities, students strengthen their literacy and communication skills in a supportive learning environment.

For students at more advanced levels, the programme incorporates practice with EIKEN and TOEFL-style assessments, helping learners build familiarity with exam formats while strengthening the academic English skills required for future success.

These clubs complement our in-school programmes, accelerate English learning, and help students progress through the AEP levels more efficiently, building the language foundation needed to succeed in an international academic setting.
